Swine Flu - is your business prepared?
Preparing businesses for the predicted increase in cases of swine flu, delegates were given a whistle-stop tour of the medical facts, legal implications and strategies they could implement to reduce the risk to their business at a recent HR and Recruitment Sector event, sponsored by BGG Associates.

Dr Lincoln Sargeant, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, gave an informative presentation about the HINI virus, the vaccination process, identifying the symptoms, what to do if any staff are experience such symptoms and simple methods to put in place to stop the illness spreading.

Caroline Banwell, Employment Solicitor of Barr Ellison suggested it would be a good time to invest time now to stay legally compliant and to minimise disruption caused by absentee staff, ensure staff have been issued with/or up to date with terms and conditions, and to communicate with staff and manage absence firmly.

Event sponsors, BGG Associates concluded this part of the seminar by giving a presentation on what businesses should consider to ensure the business still continues to operate. Key staff could be missing, you may have deadlines to meet, cash flow/invoicing. Things to consider would be to multi-skill staff where possible, document procedures, and make sure other staff are aware of deadlines. You might also need to give consideration to your supply chain and the affect this might have.

Delegates were also reminded of the Chamber's Westfield Health benefit which has some useful tools for employees and the business itself. This was followed by a short introduction to the National Apprenticeship Service.
